Akaka Falls: breathtaking State Park
If you are looking for one of the most breathtaking moments for a vacation in Hawaii, look no further than the Akaka Falls in Akaka Falls State Park. Located on the “big island,” the 442 foot waterfall is sure to be a highlight of any vacation in Hawaii.
You will want to bring your camera with you on this trek. To gain access to view the waterfall, you will hike .4 miles to reach the Akaka Fall. This hike should take approximately 30 minutes as you walk through the beautiful jungle that surrounds the trail. On your way, you will see beautiful flowers, other plant life and get a glimpse into the animal life, as well. Apart from the main waterfall, there is a lesser fall, Kahuna Falls, that you have the option of viewing. While being “lesser,” it is still impressive at 400 feet tall.
Reaching Akaka Falls, you will immediately be impressed by its sheer size and beauty. Akaka is a Hawaiian word for a “cut, crack, or split,” an appropriate name as the waterfall flows through just that. As the water meets the edge, it plunges 442 feet down a moss-laden cliff edge. At the bottom is a pool of water that seems to be sunk into the ground comparing the geography of it with its surroundings. Don’t worry about getting your camera wet here, though. The best places to photograph are well away from the splash zone.
Even after your sightseeing of the falls is finished, there is still plenty to do. Surrounding the parking lot are shops and stands selling many souvenirs, many authentic, for which you can bring home as gifts. Enjoy your stay at Akaka Falls State Park, one of the natural wonders on the Big Island of Hawaii.
